How to monetize your Substack
- List it. Upload a photo of your Substack, mark each spot and pick how you bill: per week, month, event or post. We set the price from reach, market and demand.
- Get requests. Brands find it in Browse and message you. Accept or decline.
- Get paid. The brand pays when you accept. You are paid after you post proof that the logo is up.
- Or run an auction. Share a link and let brands bid. Start a Substack auction.
Get paid to put ads on your Substack
Post the link to the published post and a screenshot of the sponsor block in the email or app. For podcast reads, share the episode link and timestamp.
Tips
- Substack has no built in ad slot, so you write the sponsor block yourself. Keep it short and in your own voice.
- Read Substack's content guidelines and keep sponsors within them.
- If you also have paid subscribers, tell them whether sponsor blocks appear in paid posts. Some readers pay to avoid them.
Questions
Does Substack allow sponsors?
Writers often run their own sponsor blocks in posts. Read the current Substack terms and content guidelines before you start.
Can I combine sponsors with paid subscriptions?
Yes. Many writers keep sponsors in free posts and leave paid posts clean.
Do I need to label it?
Yes. Say it is sponsored so readers know it is paid.
How do brands find my Substack?
List it once. Brands browse spots by type, city and price and message you through SponsorMySpot. Your email stays private.
Who sets the price?
Our pricing engine, like a ride app. It prices each spot from what it is, how many people see it and the market you are in, and the price rises when brands are asking for that kind of spot near you. Owners pick how they bill: per week, month, event or post.
When do I get paid?
The brand pays when you accept their request. You are paid after you post proof that the logo is up. Payouts go to your bank through Stripe. The fee is 8 percent.
Can brands bid against each other instead?
Yes. Run an auction: each spot opens at your start price and any brand can take it by paying double. Cards are held, not charged, until bidding closes.
